Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met his Chinese counterpart Admiral Dong Jun on the sidelines of the SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Qingdao, China, marking a significant step towards improving India-China ties. The discussions, described as constructive and forward-looking, focused on enhancing bilateral relations while emphasising the need to maintain positive momentum and avoid complexities amid evolving regional dynamics.
Constructive Exchange and Bilateral Focus
Rajnath Singh, in a post on X, shared that the meeting with Admiral Dong Jun covered issues related to bilateral relations with a focus on maintaining progress and fostering a stable relationship. He expressed satisfaction over the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra after nearly six years, viewing it as a positive development for people-to-people ties between India and China. “It is incumbent on both sides to maintain this positive momentum and avoid adding new complexities in the bilateral relationship,” Singh noted, reflecting India’s cautious optimism in navigating its ties with China.
Singh arrived in China on Thursday to attend the SCO Defence Ministers’ meeting, where he and Dong Jun, along with other defence leaders, participated in a group photograph before discussions began. The meeting highlighted a shared intention to focus on stability and avoid issues that could derail the improving ties between the two nations.
Broader Engagements Between India and China
The talks between Singh and Dong Jun follow recent engagements between Indian and Chinese officials aimed at strengthening dialogue amid broader regional challenges. On June 23, India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing, where they reviewed developments in India-China relations and discussed promoting the overall development of bilateral ties. The discussions included the need for fostering stronger people-to-people connections while addressing regional and global issues of mutual interest.
During the meeting, NSA Doval emphasised the importance of countering terrorism in all its forms to maintain peace and stability in the region, a key area of convergence in India-China regional cooperation. The Ministry of External Affairs, in a statement, highlighted that both sides spoke on bilateral, regional, and global matters, underlining the shared interest in ensuring regional stability while continuing constructive engagements.
These recent interactions, including Singh’s meeting with Admiral Dong Jun, align with India’s commitment to keeping channels of dialogue open with China, emphasising stability and cooperation in addressing regional and global concerns while safeguarding India’s interests. The focus on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra resumption reflects efforts to balance strategic discussions with initiatives that build cultural and people-centric connections between the two nations.
