Flash floods in parts of Dharamshala have led to intense rescue operations with over 250 people saved by state and central teams as authorities continue search efforts for those missing. The situation remains tense as officials work to safeguard lives amidst challenging weather conditions in Himachal Pradesh.
Rescue Efforts and Ongoing Operations
Kangra Superintendent of Police Shalini Agnihotri informed that the flash floods swept away several individuals, prompting immediate action by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and Himachal Pradesh Home Guard volunteers. “Yesterday, our teams successfully rescued 250 people while recovering two bodies. Today, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joining, three more bodies were recovered,” she stated, adding that four of the deceased have been identified so far while three people remain missing. One survivor was also rescued from the forest area, indicating the wide impact of the floods across the region.
“Today, the situation is relatively better as no new missing persons have been reported apart from those already identified,” Agnihotri noted, providing a cautious sense of relief as rescue teams continue monitoring the affected areas.
Government Response and Preventive Measures
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed all Deputy Commissioners to remain on high alert and ensure round-the-clock availability to address the situation efficiently given the adverse weather conditions. During a virtual review meeting with district administrations from Shimla, the Chief Minister instructed Deputy Commissioners to conduct relief and rehabilitation operations swiftly and on a war-footing basis to support affected individuals and communities.
The Chief Minister also emphasised the need to identify individuals or families, particularly migrant labourers, living near riverbanks, khads, and nullahs, urging their immediate relocation to safer locations to prevent further casualties. Additionally, advisories have been directed to be issued warning tourists and locals against venturing near rivers and water bodies during the ongoing monsoon season to minimise risk.
The administration continues to coordinate with local teams, SDRF, NDRF, and the police to handle the emergency while ensuring the safety of people in the affected areas. With heavy rains predicted to continue in the region, authorities are maintaining vigilant monitoring while providing necessary support to those impacted by the flash floods, demonstrating a commitment to prioritising public safety during this critical period.
