In a grand spectacle of faith and devotion, millions of devotees have gathered in Puri as the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath commenced under tight security and meticulous arrangements. The festival, also known as the Chariot Festival or Shree Gundicha Yatra, holds deep spiritual significance for devotees who believe that witnessing Lord Jagannath during this Yatra grants moksha.
Rath Yatra Begins with Devotional Fervour
The Rath Yatra, observed on the Dwitiya Tithi of the lunar month’s Shukla Paksha, sees Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra embarking on a nine-day journey from the 12th-century Jagannath Temple to Gundicha Temple. Renowned scholar Suryanarayan Rath Sharma highlighted that the Rath Yatra is the world’s most ancient chariot festival, symbolising spiritual liberation and divine blessings.
Devotees, immersed in devotion, pull the majestic chariots of Lord Jagannath (Nandighosh), Lord Balabhadra (Taladhwaja), and Goddess Subhadra (Darpadalan) over a 3 km stretch to the Gundicha Temple, which, according to legends, is the birthplace of the Chaturddha Murti. The event transforms the holy city of Puri into a vibrant sea of faith, colour, and chants, drawing pilgrims from across the nation and abroad.
Security and Preparations for a Smooth Yatra
The Odisha state government and local administration have ensured that the festival proceeds smoothly, with meticulous planning across departments. Puri Collector Sidharth Shankar Swain confirmed that all rituals and arrangements have been carefully organised, seeking the blessings of Mahaprabhu and the cooperation of devotees for a sacred celebration.
A comprehensive five-tier security cover has been implemented for the nine-day festival, with 200 platoons of police, eight companies of BSF and CRPF, and around 10,000 personnel from Odisha Police, CAPF, and Home Guards deployed to manage the crowd and maintain order. For the first time, an integrated command-and-control system has been set up to monitor the festival, using live feeds from over 275 AI-enabled CCTVs placed from Uttara Square to Puri Town and along the Puri-Konark stretch.
These preparations aim to ensure an incident-free and safe Rath Yatra while allowing devotees to participate in the spiritual journey and celebrations with devotion and peace. The festival continues to stand as a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring faith of millions in the divine journey of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra.
