On the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, paid heartfelt tributes to his grandmother at Shakti Sthal in New Delhi. Taking to social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi shared childhood photos with Indira Gandhi and expressed his admiration for her values of courage and love, which he said continue to inspire him.
“Grandma was an example of both courage and love. It is from her that I have learnt that the real strength is to fearlessly walk on the path of national interest. Her memories are my strength, which always shows me the way,” wrote Rahul Gandhi in his tribute.
Indira Gandhi, born on November 19, 1917, to India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru, holds the distinction of being the country’s first and only woman prime minister. Her tenure spanned two critical periods—January 1966 to March 1977 and January 1980 until her assassination in October 1984. She is remembered for her landmark contributions to India’s socio-economic fabric, including the nationalization of banks and the abolition of privy purses, which significantly redefined the country’s economic landscape.
Her political journey was marked by bold decisions and a focus on social reforms, earning her recognition as one of the tallest leaders on the global stage. Indira Gandhi was the second longest-serving Prime Minister after Nehru and left an indelible legacy of strong and visionary leadership.
However, her tenure was not without controversy. In October 1984, she was assassinated by her own Sikh bodyguards following Operation Bluestar, which saw the Indian Army confront Sikh separatists holed up in the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Her assassination remains one of the darkest chapters in Indian political history.
Rahul Gandhi was joined by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge at Shakti Sthal to honor the memory of the ‘Iron Lady of India.’ Sharing his homage on X, Kharge described Indira Gandhi as an epitome of lifelong struggle, courage, and dynamic leadership.
“Crores of Indians shall continue to draw inspiration from the life of ‘Iron Lady of India,’ Indira Gandhi, for she was the epitome of lifelong struggle, courage, and dynamic leadership, who selflessly contributed to nation-building. She sacrificed her life to preserve the unity and integrity of India. Our humble homage on her birth anniversary,” Kharge wrote.
Indira Gandhi’s enduring legacy as a fearless leader continues to resonate with millions, serving as a reminder of her unwavering commitment to the nation’s progress and unity.
