In a historic milestone for Indian aviation, domestic air passenger traffic crossed the 5 lakh mark in a single day on Sunday, November 17, reflecting the surge in travel demand during the festive and wedding season. According to the civil aviation ministry, a record 5,05,412 passengers flew on domestic flights, with 3,173 departures across the country. This unprecedented figure showcases the growing accessibility and popularity of air travel in India.
Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu attributed this achievement to government initiatives like the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, launched in October 2016, which has significantly improved regional air connectivity. K Rammohan Naidu emphasized that air travel has become more accessible for the average citizen, fostering greater mobility and connectivity across the country.
IndiGo, India’s largest airline, also celebrated the milestone. In a post on X, the airline noted that 5 lakh passengers taking to the skies daily is a defining moment for Indian aviation. IndiGo alone accounted for over 3.1 lakh passengers, translating to more than half of the total daily domestic flyers. “This is not just a number; it’s 3.1 lakh smiles that take off with us every day,” IndiGo stated.
The robust demand for air travel has been bolstered by the festive season and the onset of the wedding season. Gaurav Patwari, Vice President for Air Category at travel portal Cleartrip, remarked that the high passenger movement is primarily driven by these seasonal factors and predicted that strong demand will continue through the winter months. Occupancy rates for flights operated by major scheduled carriers were above 90%, underscoring the sector’s resilience and capacity to cater to peak travel demands.
However, the increase in passenger traffic has impacted on-time performance (OTP) for airlines. IndiGo recorded an OTP of 74.2% on Sunday, followed by Alliance Air at 71%, Akasa Air at 67.6%, SpiceJet at 66.1%, and Air India at 57.1%. These figures highlight challenges in maintaining punctuality amid increased operational pressures.
The milestone comes as Indian airlines implement their winter schedule, which began on October 27. Aviation regulator DGCA reported that airlines are now operating 25,007 flights weekly to and from 124 airports, a 5.37% increase compared to the previous winter schedule and 3% higher than the summer schedule.
With domestic air travel continuing to surge, the sector is poised for sustained growth, reflecting India’s increasing reliance on air transportation as a primary mode of travel.
