Qatar has urged the international community and influential parties to intensify efforts and apply pressure, particularly on the Syrian regime, to resume and actively engage in the meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee. This initiative aims to achieve a political resolution in line with the Geneva Communique and Security Council Resolution 2,254, addressing the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people and facilitating the safe return of refugees.
The statement was delivered by Second Secretary Abdullah bin Ali Behzad of the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar in Geneva during an interactive dialogue with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic. This dialogue took place within the framework of the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Qatar expressed gratitude towards the efforts of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic for concluding its report.
Further, the Qatari official highlighted the dire situation in Syria, now entering its 14th year of conflict. It is pertinent to note that the Syrian regime’s response to peaceful protests for freedom, justice, and dignity has been marked by violence, displacement, and the use of internationally banned chemical weapons. These actions have resulted in widespread destruction and have endangered entire generations of Syrians.
It emphasized that as the conflict prolongs, the scale of violations and losses continues to escalate, leading to increased humanitarian suffering among the Syrian people. The statement stressed that ending impunity for human rights violations and crimes against the Syrian people is a collective responsibility.
