Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has assured a fair and thorough investigation into the murder of retired sub-inspector Zakir Hussein in Tirunelveli district. Addressing the state assembly, M.K. Stalin reiterated that his government would not allow anyone to take the law into their own hands.
“No one can escape from the grip of the law, regardless of who is involved in the crime,” M.K. Stalin said, emphasizing that justice would be served impartially.
Murder and Investigation
Zakir Hussein was attacked and killed by a four-member gang on Tuesday while returning home on his two-wheeler. Following the murder, two men surrendered and confessed to the crime, while police are on the lookout for two more suspects. A special police team has been formed to trace the remaining culprits.
Preliminary police investigations revealed a land dispute between Zakir Hussein and Mohammed Thoufeeq, which may have been a factor in the crime. There were also counter-complaints from Mohammed Thoufeeq and his brother-in-law. In February, a Community Service Register (CSR) entry—not an FIR—was recorded in connection with the case. M.K. Stalin acknowledged that the murder took place during the course of these investigations.
“A serious investigation will be conducted, and all those responsible will be brought to justice without bias,” he added.
Political Uproar in Assembly
The murder sparked a heated debate in the state assembly, with Leader of Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) accusing the government of failing to protect Zakir Hussein. EPS pointed out that Zakir Hussein had filed complaints with the Tirunelveli police about receiving death threats for opposing the encroachment of Wakf land. However, no action was taken, and he was not provided protection, EPS alleged.
Adding to the tension, a Facebook video from January 8, in which Zakir Hussein spoke about threats to his life, has resurfaced on social media. In the clip, he claimed that 20-30 people had been threatening him.
EPS also highlighted that the murder occurred during the holy month of Ramzan, causing distress and unrest in the region. Moving a special calling attention motion in the assembly, he criticized the government for its handling of law and order.
Government’s Assurance
In response, M.K. Stalin reiterated the government’s commitment to justice. He noted that even MLAs who had not listed their names to speak on the motion were allowed to participate in the discussion, showcasing the government’s transparency.
M.K. Stalin assured the assembly that the investigation would be conducted thoroughly and impartially, and those responsible would face strict legal action.
