  • Three killed in Puri Rath Yatra stampede, probe ordered.

The annual Puri Rath Yatra, a cherished spiritual event that draws lakhs of devotees to Odisha, turned tragic this year after a stampede during the celebrations claimed the lives of three devotees and left several others injured. In response, the Odisha government has launched a high-level inquiry and assured strict action against those responsible, vowing to prioritise safety and prevent such incidents in future festivals.

Government orders high-level probe, promises accountability

Describing the incident as “very unfortunate,” Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan stated that a senior official will conduct a thorough investigation, and appropriate action will follow based on the findings. “We will take strict action once the report comes,” Prithiviraj Harichandan said, while expressing his prayers for the well-being of devotees.

Following the stampede, the state government replaced key officials in Puri, appointing Pinak Mishra as the new Superintendent of Police and Chanchal Rana as the new Puri Collector. Odisha DCP Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi were suspended for negligence of duty.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi conveyed deep sorrow over the deaths and announced financial assistance of ₹25 lakh to the families of each deceased devotee. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of devotees, adding, “Rath Yatra is a source of pride for Odisha, and its sanctity and safety will be safeguarded at all costs.”

Smooth conduct of rituals amid tragedy

Despite the unfortunate incident, temple authorities confirmed that the spiritual essence of the Rath Yatra was maintained, and the rituals continued without disruption. Arabinda K Padhee, Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannatha Temple Office, stated that the chariots reached Shree Gundicha Temple on June 28, following tradition, and visited their birthplace the next day.

Padhee emphasised that unique and mesmerising rituals were conducted smoothly and urged devotees to cooperate with instructions during upcoming rituals, including the important Sandhya Darshan on July 4. “We acknowledge the support and cooperation of the devotees,” he said.

Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania also noted that the Pahandi Bije ceremony of Lord Jagannath was completed peacefully, stating that lakhs of devotees across the country witnessed the ceremony without any disturbance.

The Puri Rath Yatra holds immense cultural and spiritual significance in Odisha, drawing pilgrims from across India to witness the grand procession of Lord Jagannath’s chariots. However, the stampede has prompted the authorities to review crowd management strategies and implement stricter safety measures in the coming days to ensure that the sanctity of the festival is preserved while protecting the lives of devotees who come to seek the blessings of Mahaprabhu.
