New Delhi. With the failure of the negotiations for an alliance between BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal for the Lok Sabha elections, it is now clear that BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal will contest separately. This sets the stage for a four-cornered contest on all thirteen seats in the state.
It will be interesting to see how the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) capitalizes on these contests to gain political advantage in Punjab. Following the election announcement, AAP was the first to declare the names of its 8 candidates. On the other hand, despite having less influence in the state, BJP is not overly confident. The alliance that has been running with the Akali Dal for the past 25 years has broken, and BJP has decided to contest independently.
In addition to Congress, which won the most seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, all four parties – Aam Aadmi Party, Shiromani Akali Dal, and BJP will contest separately. However, the wave of sympathy growing in Punjab due to actions against AAP is aiding the party. Taking advantage of this momentum, the Aam Aadmi Party is currently harboring dreams of reaching ‘Delhi’.
Seats in the 2019 elections ?
Congress – 8
Shiromani Akali Dal – 2
BJP – 2
AAP – 1
Challenge for BJP
Despite being the least powerful in Punjab, BJP’s confidence has increased. What impact will the action against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal have in this state? Additionally, through the farmer protests, BJP has faced the ire of the farmers. Shiromani Akali Dal has severed ties with BJP and has gained sympathy from farmers by not canceling the three farm laws. It seems that BJP will have to contend with this.
