OpenAI, the renowned US-based artificial intelligence company, has launched a new ChatGPT tool named “deep research,” marking a significant step in the ongoing global AI race. The announcement, made on Monday, comes at a critical time when the emerging DeepSeek chatbot from China is stirring up competition in the artificial intelligence field. As the market for AI technologies grows rapidly, with both innovation and cost-effectiveness being key determinants, OpenAI’s latest offering comes as a strategic move to maintain its leadership in the sector.

DeepSeek, a newcomer to the AI scene, has raised eyebrows in Silicon Valley with its impressive performance and reportedly low cost, prompting industry experts to call for quicker development and innovation from US developers. The growing challenge posed by DeepSeek underscores the urgency for established players like OpenAI to push forward with their advancements.

In response, OpenAI has unveiled the “deep research” tool, which the company claims can achieve in minutes what would traditionally take hours for a human researcher to complete. The tool is designed to act as an independent agent, capable of processing and synthesizing vast amounts of online data to generate a comprehensive report akin to the work of a research analyst. By simply providing a prompt, users can leverage ChatGPT to search, analyze, and synthesize hundreds of online sources, making it a powerful tool for research, data analysis, and more.

The tool’s capabilities were demonstrated in a livestreamed announcement, where OpenAI researchers showcased how “deep research” can synthesize data from web searches to recommend ski equipment for a snow holiday in Japan. This example highlighted the tool’s practical application and its potential to assist with both specialized research and general consumer needs.

In addition to this product release, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman is currently in Tokyo, Japan, where he is set to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to discuss artificial intelligence developments. Altman’s visit is part of broader international efforts to strengthen global AI infrastructure and ensure that the US remains at the forefront of the technology. SoftBank Group, led by Masayoshi Son, is also a key player in this initiative, as both OpenAI and SoftBank are involved in a joint venture known as the Stargate drive. This project aims to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure in the United States, signaling a major commitment to advancing the sector.

Altman’s visit to Tokyo is expected to include discussions with business leaders from around 500 companies, where plans to bolster Japan’s AI infrastructure are expected to be unveiled. These plans reportedly include building AI data centers and power plants to support the growing demand for AI technologies, although details regarding the scale of the investment required remain unclear.

In a separate interview, Altman expressed interest in developing “a new kind of hardware” that leverages artificial intelligence, in partnership with Jony Ive, the former Chief Design Officer at Apple. However, Altman also cautioned that the project could take several years before a prototype is revealed.

While OpenAI is focused on advancing its own AI capabilities, it has also been closely monitoring DeepSeek, which Altman referred to as “a good model” for demonstrating the competitive landscape in AI reasoning technology. However, he also pointed out that DeepSeek’s capabilities are not groundbreaking, as they are based on existing technologies, including those used in ChatGPT. DeepSeek has recently been at the center of controversy, with allegations that it has reverse-engineered AI models developed by US tech giants, including OpenAI.

In response to the growing threat, OpenAI issued a warning last week, revealing that Chinese companies are actively attempting to replicate advanced AI models like ChatGPT. This has prompted OpenAI to strengthen its ties with US authorities and enhance efforts to safeguard its intellectual property and technological advancements.

As OpenAI continues to lead in the AI space, the emergence of competitors like DeepSeek highlights the dynamic and fast-evolving nature of artificial intelligence. With new tools like “deep research” and strategic international collaborations, OpenAI is positioning itself to remain at the forefront of the AI revolution, despite the growing competition from global players.
