Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour during his first bilateral visit to the country, marking a significant diplomatic moment that underscored the growing depth, warmth, and strategic importance of India–Ethiopia relations. The award ceremony, held in Addis Ababa, reflected Ethiopia’s recognition of Prime Minister Modi’s leadership on the global stage and his role in strengthening cooperation between the two nations, while also symbolising the shared historical bonds and future-oriented partnership that link India and Ethiopia.

A historic honour recognising leadership and India–Ethiopia cooperation

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Ethiopia on December 16 for a two-day bilateral visit, the first of its kind, signalling India’s renewed focus on Africa and the Global South. In a special ceremony hosted at the Addis International Convention Centre, Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed conferred upon him the Great Honor Nishan of Ethiopia, the highest national award of the country. The honour was bestowed in recognition of Prime Minister Modi’s exceptional contribution to strengthening the India–Ethiopia partnership and his visionary leadership as a global statesman.

The ceremony was attended by senior leaders, diplomats, and representatives from both countries, reflecting the importance Ethiopia attaches to its relationship with India. By conferring its highest honour on the Indian Prime Minister, Ethiopia sent a strong message about the value it places on India as a trusted partner in development, diplomacy, and international cooperation. The award also highlighted the growing alignment between the two nations on issues affecting developing countries and the broader Global South.

In his address at the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi described it as a profound honour to receive such recognition from one of the world’s most ancient civilizations. He accepted the award with humility and gratitude, acknowledging not only the gesture from the Ethiopian leadership but also the affection of the Ethiopian people. He expressed deep appreciation to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for his leadership and for the warmth extended to him and his delegation during the visit.

Prime Minister Modi praised Prime Minister Abiy’s efforts to promote national unity, sustainability, and inclusive development in Ethiopia, noting that these priorities resonate strongly with India’s own development journey. He highlighted the shared values that underpin India–Ethiopia relations, including respect for sovereignty, commitment to social progress, and belief in multilateral cooperation. The recognition, he noted, was not merely personal but symbolic of the friendship and trust that have grown between the two countries over decades.

The conferment of the award also reflected Ethiopia’s acknowledgement of India’s consistent engagement with Africa. India’s development partnerships, capacity-building initiatives, and people-centric approach have earned goodwill across the continent, and Ethiopia has been a key partner in this engagement. The honour thus served as an affirmation of India’s broader role in supporting African aspirations while fostering mutually beneficial cooperation.

Shared history, people-to-people ties, and a vision for the Global South

In his remarks, Prime Minister Modi placed particular emphasis on the historical and cultural ties that bind India and Ethiopia. He recalled that for more than a century, Indian teachers and professionals have contributed to Ethiopia’s progress, especially in the fields of education and capacity building. These people-to-people connections, he said, form the bedrock of bilateral relations and have helped create enduring bonds of trust and friendship between the two societies.

Highlighting the importance of knowledge in nation building, Prime Minister Modi described it as a privilege for Indians to have played a role in Ethiopia’s development journey. He underlined that cooperation in education, skill development, and human resource training remains a vital pillar of India–Ethiopia relations. Such collaboration, he noted, reflects a shared belief that empowering people through education and knowledge is key to sustainable and inclusive growth.

Prime Minister Modi dedicated the prestigious honour to all Indians and Ethiopians who have nurtured bilateral ties over generations. He conveyed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for the recognition bestowed upon him, framing the award as a tribute to collective effort rather than individual achievement. This gesture reinforced the idea that diplomacy is built not only by leaders but also by citizens, professionals, and communities who sustain relationships over time.

The award ceremony also highlighted the broader strategic context of India–Ethiopia relations. Both countries are active voices in the Global South and share common perspectives on development challenges, climate action, and reform of global governance institutions. Prime Minister Modi noted that the honour marked a milestone not only in bilateral ties but also in advancing a positive agenda for the Global South, where cooperation among developing nations is increasingly vital.

Ethiopia, as a key African nation with a rich civilizational heritage and growing regional influence, occupies an important place in India’s Africa policy. India’s engagement with Ethiopia spans trade, investment, development assistance, defence cooperation, and cultural exchange. The visit and the conferment of the award reinforced the intention of both sides to further expand cooperation in these areas, building a partnership that is forward-looking and resilient.

The symbolism of the Great Honor Nishan of Ethiopia carries particular weight given the country’s long history and its role as a diplomatic hub in Africa. By honouring Prime Minister Modi, Ethiopia acknowledged India’s constructive role in global affairs and its commitment to partnerships based on equality, respect, and shared progress. The recognition also reflected Ethiopia’s appreciation of India’s support in international forums and its advocacy for the concerns of developing nations.

As Prime Minister Modi’s visit continued with bilateral engagements and discussions on future cooperation, the award stood as a defining moment, setting a positive tone for the next phase of India–Ethiopia relations. It highlighted how shared history, mutual respect, and a common vision for development can translate into strong diplomatic bonds. The honour underscored the evolving partnership between the two countries, rooted in the past yet firmly oriented toward shared aspirations in a changing global landscape.
