Amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, the President Joe Biden administration is exploring the possibility of accepting certain Palestinians from Gaza as refugees into the United States. Internal government documents reveal discussions across federal agencies regarding potential options to aid Palestinians seeking to escape the war-torn region.
One proposal involves utilizing the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program to facilitate the entry of Palestinians with immediate family members who are American citizens or permanent residents. Additionally, officials have considered welcoming Palestinians from Gaza who have American relatives and are currently in neighboring Egypt. However, this plan would require coordination with Egypt, which has shown reluctance in accommodating large numbers of Gaza residents.
Individuals eligible for refugee status would undergo various screenings, including medical and security checks, before being granted permanent residency and resettlement benefits in the U.S. While the number of eligible individuals is anticipated to be limited, these proposed measures could provide a vital lifeline to Palestinians seeking refuge from the conflict.
Meanwhile, the toll of the Israel-Hamas war continues to mount, with the Hamas-run Health Ministry reporting over 34,000 deaths, 77,000 injuries, and widespread displacement of civilians in Gaza. President Biden’s administration has emphasized its commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to address the dire conditions in the region while reiterating its rejection of forced relocations or border redrawings.
These potential initiatives mark a departure from longstanding U.S. refugee policy, which has historically resettled few Palestinians. The move could face criticism from Republican lawmakers, particularly amidst ongoing debates over immigration policy and border security. Nonetheless, the President’s administration remains focused on increasing refugee resettlement efforts, with a goal of admitting up to 125,000 refugees in fiscal year 2024.
