In a significant move towards uplifting the socio-economic status of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), the government has announced the launch of the Pradhan Mantri PVTG Development Mission. This mission, aimed at saturating PVTG families and habitations with essential facilities, including safe housing, clean water, education, health, and sustainable livelihood opportunities, is set to receive a substantial allocation of Rs. 15,000 crore from the Development Action Plan for the Scheduled Tribes.
Union Tribal Affairs Minister, Arjun Munda, highlighted the historic focus on PVTGs, emphasizing the importance of holistic development and education for tribal communities. He noted the significant strides made in education, with the establishment of 740 Eklavya Residential Model Schools and the recruitment of thousands of teachers over the next three years.
The ministry also implements several scholarship schemes benefiting over 30 lakh tribal students annually, ensuring access to quality education. Additionally, efforts to strengthen healthcare systems, eliminate sickle cell anemia by 2047, and develop model tribal villages under the Pradhan Mantri Adi Adarsh Gram Yojna underscore the government’s commitment to tribal welfare.
Furthermore, initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Vikas Mission and the promotion of tribal entrepreneurship through Van Dhan Vikas Kendras reflect efforts to drive livelihood-driven tribal development across the country.
The government’s commitment to tribal welfare is evident in the substantial increase in budgetary allocations for the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, reaching Rs. 12,461.88 crores in 2023-24, compared to Rs. 4,295.94 crores in 2013-14. Additionally, a five-fold increase in budget allocation under Scheduled Tribe Component Funds demonstrates the government’s resolve to uplift ST communities.
With a focus on inclusive development and empowerment, the government’s initiatives are poised to transform the lives of tribal communities, ensuring their socio-economic upliftment and integration into the mainstream of society.
