Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commenced a significant five-nation tour aimed at enhancing India’s global partnerships, focusing on expanding its presence across the Global South and strengthening bonds with key partners across the Atlantic. The tour will cover Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia, reflecting India’s evolving foreign policy approach centred around historical ties, economic engagement, and multilateral cooperation.
During his first stop in Accra, Ghana, PM Modi emphasised the importance of Ghana as a valued partner in the Global South and highlighted its crucial role in the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States. The visit aims to deepen cooperation in sectors such as investment, energy, health, security, and development. PM Modi will address the Parliament of Ghana, reinforcing democratic connections between the two nations.
Strengthening Diaspora Bonds in Trinidad & Tobago
Following Ghana, PM Modi will visit Trinidad & Tobago, underlining the deep-rooted historical and cultural connections between the two countries, as Indians first arrived in the Caribbean nation 180 years ago. He plans to meet President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to discuss bilateral cooperation, focusing on rejuvenating the ties of ancestry and kinship while exploring new avenues for collaboration in development and trade.
Expanding Economic Partnerships in Argentina and Brazil
The Prime Minister will continue his tour in Argentina, marking the first bilateral visit by an Indian PM to the country in 57 years. PM Modi plans to hold discussions with President Javier Milei, focusing on enhancing cooperation in agriculture, critical minerals, energy, technology, trade, tourism, and investments, positioning Argentina as a key economic partner in Latin America and a collaborator within the G20 framework.
In Brazil, PM Modi will attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, reaffirming India’s commitment to BRICS as a vital platform for cooperation among emerging economies. He will meet with global leaders on the sidelines of the summit, aiming to strengthen India’s position within multilateral forums and contribute towards shaping a balanced multipolar world order. PM Modi will also undertake a bilateral state visit to Brasilia, the first in nearly six decades, to collaborate with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on advancing the priorities of the Global South.
Concluding the Tour with Namibia Visit
The final leg of the tour will take PM Modi to Namibia, where he plans to meet President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to establish a new roadmap for cooperation between the two nations. Highlighting the shared history of anti-colonial struggle, PM Modi aims to expand partnerships in areas beneficial to both countries and the wider Global South. He will also address the Joint Session of the Namibian Parliament, reinforcing India’s commitment to supporting democratic values and multilateral cooperation.
Throughout the tour, PM Modi seeks to solidify India’s engagements with nations across Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean while ensuring active participation within multilateral platforms such as BRICS, the African Union, ECOWAS, and CARICOM, reflecting India’s proactive role in global affairs and the Global South.
