PM Modi’s visit to Ayodhya for hoisting the saffron flag atop the newly completed Ram Mandir marks a deeply symbolic milestone, combining cultural heritage, religious sentiment, and national significance. PM Modi’s Ceremony, Symbolism and Significance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Ayodhya represents the culminating moment of a decades-long cultural movement. On Tuesday, he will ceremonially hoist a saffron flag atop the shikhar of the Ram Mandir, a gesture symbolising the completion of the temple’s construction and marking a historic chapter in India’s cultural narrative. The event, widely regarded as the third and final milestone after the Bhoomi Pujan of August 2020 and the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of January 2024, is expected to draw around 10,000 attendees—including key figures who have played crucial roles in the Ram Mandir movement.
Among the notable attendees will be Prime Minister Modi himself, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Most of the gathering consists of foot soldiers and supporters who have contributed to the movement for years, making the event an emotional and cultural culmination for many.
The flag that will be hoisted on the temple is a right-angled triangular saffron banner, 10 feet in height and 20 feet in length. It bears a radiant Sun symbol, representing the brilliance and valour of Lord Rama. Alongside this, the flag features the sacred ‘Om’ and the image of the Kovidara tree, each symbol carefully chosen to represent dignity, spiritual continuity, and the guiding virtues of Ram Rajya. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the flag is more than a ceremonial object—it carries a message of unity and timeless culture.
The shikhar on which the flag will rise has been constructed in the traditional North Indian Nagara architectural style, characterised by its sharply ascending tower and intricate carvings. Surrounding the temple stands the 800-metre Parkota, a circumambulatory enclosure designed in the South Indian architectural tradition. The two styles together reflect a thoughtful blend of India’s diverse architectural heritage, symbolising the unity in cultural variation that the Ram Temple seeks to embody.
PM Modi’s itinerary in Ayodhya is extensive and spiritually immersive. He will begin with a visit to the Saptamandir complex, which houses temples dedicated to revered figures such as Maharshi Vashishtha, Maharshi Vishwamitra, Maharshi Agastya, Maharshi Valmiki, Devi Ahilya, Nishadraj Guha, and Mata Shabari. These temples collectively depict the broad spiritual canvas of the Ramayana, emphasising the contributions of sages, devotees, and allies in the life of Lord Ram.
Following this, the Prime Minister is scheduled to visit the Sheshavtar Mandir before proceeding to the Mata Annapurna temple for darshan. He will then perform pooja at the Ram Darbar Garbh Grah and later visit the Ram Lalla Garbh Grah. These rituals signify an important moment as Modi returns to the sanctum where he performed the Pran Pratishtha earlier in 2024.
At around noon, he will hoist the saffron flag atop the Ram Mandir’s shikhar, a ceremony meant to symbolise the final completion of the temple construction and the beginning of a renewed era of spiritual celebration. According to the PMO, this historic moment marks both an architectural accomplishment and a cultural awakening.
The timing of the ceremony is also of deep importance. It aligns with the Panchami date of Shukla Paksha in the month of Margashirsha, coinciding with the Abhijit Muhurat of Shri Ram and Maa Sita’s Vivah Panchami. This day symbolises divine union and is regarded as especially auspicious in Hindu tradition. Additionally, the date marks the martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, who meditated in Ayodhya for 48 hours during the 17th century. This convergence of spiritual histories adds further depth to the event’s significance.
The Ram Temple complex itself is a testament to India’s craftsmanship and devotion. The outer walls of the main shrine feature 87 intricately carved stone episodes from the Valmiki Ramayana, narrating chapters from Lord Ram’s life. In addition, 79 bronze-cast episodes depicting broader Indian culture have been placed along the enclosure walls. These artistic elements are intended to provide visitors with a profound and educational experience, helping them connect with both scripture and cultural history.
Massive Security Arrangements and Administrative Readiness
As the city prepares for the high-profile event, Ayodhya has been placed under an extensive security blanket. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted an on-ground review of arrangements to ensure that the event proceeds seamlessly. Thousands of officials, personnel, and specialised security units have been deployed across the city.
According to the Uttar Pradesh government, a total of 6,970 security personnel have been stationed, including commandos from the Anti-Terrorism Squad, National Security Guard snipers, cyber-security experts, and technical teams. Anti-drone technologies are operational across the temple premises, supported by advanced surveillance and monitoring systems to eliminate aerial threats. Senior police officials, ranging from superintendents to field-level teams, are supervising the operations to maintain coordination and respond quickly to any emerging situation.
Crowd management has been given top priority due to the expected turnout. Units trained in explosives detection, emergency response, and security screening are positioned across crucial points throughout Ayodhya. Specialised teams—including bomb disposal squads, dog squads, VVIP protection units, fire brigades, and rapid response teams—are on active duty to prevent disruptions and ensure public safety.
In addition to security, logistical planning has been carefully designed to handle the influx of devotees, dignitaries, and media personnel. Traffic management systems have been re-structured for the day, restricting movement in designated zones and creating clear routes for emergency services and high-level delegations. Hotels and public spaces are illuminated with saffron and warm lighting, and local markets are decorated to welcome the large number of visitors.
