Prime Minister Narendra Modi received an emotional and vibrant welcome in Zagreb, Croatia, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Balkan nation. His arrival was celebrated with cultural performances, chants of “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai,” and notably, recitations of the ‘Gayatri Mantra’ by local Croatian citizens—highlighting the deep-rooted cultural connection between the two countries.
Warm reception by Indian diaspora and Croatians
As PM Modi reached his hotel in Zagreb, the atmosphere was charged with energy and emotion. Members of the Indian community enthusiastically greeted him, waving flags and singing patriotic slogans. A group of Croatians, dressed in traditional white attire, joined in chanting Sanskrit shlokas including the revered ‘Gayatri Mantra,’ showcasing Croatia’s respect and admiration for Indian culture.
Sharing the moment on social media, PM Modi wrote, “The bonds of culture are strong and vibrant! Happy to see Indian culture has so much respect in Croatia…” He also posted a video clip showing glimpses of the warm reception, including cultural performances that reflected the vibrant Indo-Croatian camaraderie.
Engagement with Indian community and bilateral focus
During his stay, PM Modi interacted with members of the Indian community in Croatia, acknowledging their contributions to the country’s development while appreciating their continued connection to their roots in India. “There is immense enthusiasm among the Indian community here about this visit and its impact on making our nations’ bond stronger than ever before,” he said in a post on X.
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković personally welcomed PM Modi at the airport—a special gesture underscoring the significance of the visit. The leaders are expected to hold formal talks to explore avenues for enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including culture, trade, and technology.
PM Modi’s visit to Croatia concludes his three-nation tour, which also included Cyprus and Canada. He had recently attended the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, before heading to Zagreb. His previous interactions with Croatian leadership took place during COP-26 and the India-EU Leaders Meeting in 2021.
