As the first phase of Lok Sabha polls commenced across 21 states and Union Territories, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to urge citizens, especially young and first-time voters, to participate in large numbers. Emphasizing the significance of every vote, PM Modi underscored the importance of individual voices in shaping the electoral process.
In a post across six languages including English, Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, and Assamese, PM Modi encouraged voters to exercise their franchise diligently. He tweeted, “The 2024 Lok Sabha elections commence today! As 102 seats across 21 states and UTs go to the polls, I urge all those voting in these seats to exercise their franchise in record numbers. I particularly call upon the young and first-time voters to vote in large numbers. After all, every vote counts and every voice matters!”
Voting for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections encompasses 102 seats, with polling stations open from 7 am onwards. Notable constituencies include those in Tamil Nadu (39), Uttarakhand (5), Arunachal Pradesh (2), and Meghalaya (2), among others.
In addition to Lok Sabha polling, assembly elections are being held in Arunachal Pradesh (60 seats) and Sikkim (32 seats) simultaneously.
Over 16.63 crore eligible voters are eligible to cast their ballots in this initial phase, including 35.67 lakh first-time voters and 3.51 crore individuals aged between 20 to 29. Notably, 11,371 individuals from the third gender category are also eligible to vote.
As the BJP-led NDA seeks a third consecutive term under PM Modi’s leadership, the opposition, united under the banner of the INDIA alliance, aims for a change in political fortunes. This phase of elections sets the stage for a crucial electoral process that will determine the direction of India’s governance for the coming years.
