Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Brasilia for a State Visit after concluding what he described as a highly productive participation in the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, emphasising India’s vision for global cooperation while deepening bilateral ties with Brazil and exploring opportunities across trade, defence, technology, and people-to-people connections.

PM Modi was received warmly at Brasilia airport by Brazil’s Defence Minister Jose Mucio Monteiro Filho, where he was welcomed with a traditional Samba Reggae performance. The visit to Brasilia follows the two-day BRICS Summit where the Prime Minister engaged with global leaders, underlining India’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with emerging economies and focusing on a people-centric approach to global progress.

Productive BRICS Summit Engagements

During the BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Modi held a series of bilateral meetings with global leaders, describing the Rio de Janeiro leg as productive and meaningful for India’s foreign policy objectives. In his address during the session on ‘Environment, COP-30, and Global Health,’ PM Modi announced that India, under its upcoming BRICS chairmanship, would redefine the grouping with a focus on “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability,” reflecting India’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable global development.

PM Modi shared a video on social media showcasing his participation at the BRICS Summit, including moments of discussions with world leaders and the warm reception from the Indian diaspora upon his arrival in Rio. He lauded Brazil’s leadership during its BRICS Presidency and emphasised that the discussions held would enhance India’s friendship with various countries, highlighting areas like technology collaboration, digital infrastructure, healthcare, and trade.

On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi met Uruguay President Yamandu Orsi to discuss the expansion of the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement, aiming to enhance economic cooperation and unlock greater trade potential between India and Latin American nations. The discussions also covered areas like ICT, defence, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals, demonstrating India’s intention to broaden its collaborative footprint in South America.

Focus on Strengthening India-Brazil Strategic Partnership

During the State Visit to Brasilia, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, with a focus on expanding the strategic partnership between India and Brazil in multiple areas of mutual interest. Key sectors to be discussed include trade, energy, defence cooperation, agriculture, space, technology, health, and avenues to promote people-to-people linkages, reflecting the growing importance of India-Brazil ties in the evolving global context.

The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that PM Modi’s visit aims to build on the momentum gained during the BRICS Summit while translating the outcomes into stronger bilateral frameworks. PM Modi’s visit to Brazil is part of his broader five-nation diplomatic outreach, which has seen him engaging with leaders in Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and now Brazil, with Namibia being his next stop.

In his message shared on X, PM Modi expressed optimism about the Brazil leg of his visit, stating that he looks forward to detailed discussions with President Lula to enhance the multifaceted India-Brazil partnership, leveraging the strong political will on both sides to translate shared visions into actionable cooperation.

PM Modi’s visit underlines India’s strategic intent to strengthen ties with South American nations, explore synergies within BRICS, and build durable frameworks of cooperation, positioning India as a reliable partner committed to shared growth and global stability.
