Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized President Joe Biden on Tuesday for delaying certain weapons shipments to Israel, implying that this was hindering Israel’s military operations in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The ongoing conflict has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis for Palestinians.
PM Netanyahu, in a video statement, directly addressed President Biden, expressing frustration over what he described as “bottlenecks” in arms transfers. He emphasized the urgency of receiving necessary tools to expedite their military objectives.
“It’s inconceivable that in the past few months, the administration has been withholding weapons and ammunitions to Israel,” PM Netanyahu said, stressing the need for expeditious support.
The United States has reportedly paused the delivery of heavy bombs since May due to concerns about civilian casualties in Gaza, particularly in densely populated areas like Rafah. However, Secretary of State Antony Blinken clarified that apart from the heavy bombs, all other arms transfers to Israel are proceeding as usual.
Responding to PM Netanyahu’s remarks, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated, “We generally do not know what he’s talking about. We just don’t,” suggesting a lack of clarity or agreement on the specifics of the situation.
Despite the delay in certain weapon shipments, two top Democrats in Congress recently approved a $15 billion sale of F-15s to Israel, underscoring ongoing military support amid international criticism.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas, now in its ninth month, has led to extensive casualties and a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. International scrutiny has intensified over the U.S.’s military and diplomatic backing of Israel amid allegations of disproportionate force and civilian casualties.
PM Netanyahu’s criticism of the President Biden administration comes amid domestic political pressures and ongoing efforts to manage the volatile situation in the Middle East.
