The Indian contingent is all set to begin its campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics on July 25. With a strong team of 117 athletes, India will compete in 69 medal events across 16 sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, equestrian, golf, hockey, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and tennis. After a record medal haul of seven medals, including a gold, at Tokyo 2022, India aims to surpass this tally at Paris 2024.
All eyes will be on Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic champion in the men’s javelin throw, who is set to defend his title. Chopra, who aspires to breach the 90-metre mark for the first time in his career, will begin his quest with the qualifiers scheduled for August 6, followed by the final two days later. Additionally, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu will compete in badminton events from July 27 to August 5, aiming to add another medal to her impressive collection. Mirabai Chanu, who won silver in Tokyo 2020, will compete in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event on August 7.
Among other individual medal hopefuls are boxers Nikhat Zareen, a two-time world champion, and Lovlina Borgohain, a Tokyo bronze medallist. Archers Deepika Kumari and Tarundeep Rai will be the first Indians in action at Paris Olympics, participating in the individual ranking rounds on July 25. India’s first medal event is slated for July 27, with the mixed team 10m air rifle event. Two Indian teams, comprising Sandeep Singh and Elavenil Valarivan, and Arjun Babuta and Ramita Jindal, will compete at the National Shooting Center in Chateauroux.
