Bengaluru witnessed a spectacular display of athleticism as Abha Khatua secured the women’s shot put title at the Indian Grand Prix 3 2024 athletics meet held at Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Wednesday. Abha, already adorned with an Asian Championships silver medal, clinched victory with a final throw measuring an impressive 17.93 meters. Her performance underscored her consistent prowess in the discipline, following her national record-breaking achievement of 18.41 meters at the recent Federation Cup athletics meet.
Despite her stellar showing, Abha has yet to breach the Paris 2024 Olympics qualifying mark of 18.80 meters. Nevertheless, her current standing at 27th in the Road to Paris rankings positions her favorably for Olympic contention, with the top 32 eligible athletes by rankings and entry standard securing a spot in the women’s shot put event.
In other highlights from the event, Sachin Yadav set a personal best in the men’s javelin throw, launching an impressive 82.69 meters on his penultimate attempt to claim victory. His performance overshadowed competitors such as Rohit Yadav and the absent Kishore Jena, Asian Games silver medallist, in a field striving to meet the Paris 2024 Olympics qualifying standard of 85.50 meters.
The meet also witnessed exceptional feats in track events, with Jyothika Sri Dandi achieving a personal best of 51.53 seconds to triumph in the women’s 400 meters final. Tokyo Olympian Subha Venkatesan closely followed with her own personal best of 52.34 seconds, securing the second position, while Poovamma Raju Machettira claimed third place in 52.62 seconds.
Furthermore, the women’s long jump event saw a captivating duel between Ancy Sojan and Nayana James, with Ancy prevailing with a final jump of 6.52 meters against Nayana’s 6.48 meters. Bhavani Yadav Bhagavat completed the podium with a jump of 6.27 meters.
The Indian Grand Prix 3 2024 athletics meet also crowned champions in various other disciplines, including Poorva Hitesh Sawant in women’s triple jump, Karthik U in men’s triple jump, and Sneha SS in women’s 100 meters, among others.
