Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has vehemently denied sexual abuse allegations made by his sister, Ann Altman, in a lawsuit filed on Monday. The lawsuit, submitted to the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Missouri, accuses Sam Altman of sexually abusing his sister regularly between the years 1997 and 2006. The claims, which are now being taken to court for the first time, have added a layer of controversy to Sam Altman’s already high-profile career.
According to the lawsuit, the alleged abuse occurred at the family home in Clayton, Missouri, beginning when Ann, referred to as Annie, was only three years old and Sam was twelve. The complaint outlines that the sexual abuse took place “several times per week” and escalated over time, starting with oral sex and later progressing to penetration. It also claims that these actions caused Annie Altman to suffer “severe emotional distress, mental anguish, and depression,” which, according to the filing, will continue to impact her in the future.
This lawsuit marks the first legal step taken by Ann Altman after she had publicly made similar allegations on social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter). In her previous statements, she had accused her brother of sexual assault, but it is only now that she has decided to pursue legal action. Representing her in this case is Ryan Mahoney, an attorney from an Illinois-based law firm that specializes in sexual assault and harassment cases.
The lawsuit is requesting a jury trial and demands damages exceeding $75,000. This legal filing has sent shockwaves through the Altman family and is likely to attract widespread attention due to Sam Altman’s prominent role as the CEO of OpenAI, the company responsible for the creation of the artificial intelligence system, ChatGPT.
In response to the allegations, Sam Altman, along with his mother, Connie, and his brothers, Jack and Max, issued a joint statement on X, where they flatly denied the accusations. The statement reads, “Annie has made deeply hurtful and entirely untrue claims about our family, and especially Sam.” It continued by stating that the family had initially refrained from commenting publicly out of respect for Annie’s privacy, but felt compelled to address the issue now that legal action had been initiated. The Altman family expressed their distress over the situation, calling the allegations “utterly untrue” and revealing that Annie Altman has “mental health challenges.” They claimed that Annie “refuses conventional treatment” and is prone to lashing out at family members who are trying to support her.
Sam Altman, who has garnered international recognition due to OpenAI’s groundbreaking innovations, including the launch of ChatGPT, is no stranger to public scrutiny. OpenAI, the company he leads, is valued at approximately $157 billion, with significant backing from corporate giants such as Microsoft, Nvidia, and SoftBank. Under his leadership, the company has made waves in the artificial intelligence sector, with ChatGPT gaining widespread popularity since its release in late 2022. However, despite his professional success, Sam Altman has now found himself embroiled in personal controversy, which is expected to generate significant media attention.
This is not the first lawsuit that Sam Altman has faced in recent months. In March 2023, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and a former co-founder of OpenAI, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging a breach of contract and fiduciary duty. Musk, who was part of OpenAI when it was founded in 2015 as a nonprofit organization, left the board in 2018. He has since been vocal in criticizing the company for allegedly abandoning its original mission of operating as a nonprofit. Musk, now the head of the AI startup xAI, is currently suing OpenAI and its leadership, including Sam Altman, to prevent the company from becoming a fully for-profit entity.
Musk’s legal challenge against OpenAI was initially filed in a San Francisco state court but was later refiled in federal court. In a blog post in June, OpenAI responded to Musk’s claims, asserting that it was Musk who had pushed for the company to become a for-profit entity in 2017, contrary to Musk’s claims that OpenAI had strayed from its original nonprofit purpose.
As the lawsuits surrounding both personal and professional matters continue to unfold, Sam Altman is likely to face more scrutiny from both the legal system and the public. With his reputation at the forefront of these controversies, it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will impact his career and the future of OpenAI. The outcome of these cases is expected to have significant repercussions not only for Sam Altman but also for the technology industry and its growing intersection with legal and personal disputes.
