The Sultanate of Oman has expressed its warm welcome for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2728, which calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Palestinian territories and emphasizes the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
In an official statement released by the Foreign Ministry, Oman reiterated its steadfast support for all UN resolutions aimed at fostering peace in the region. The ministry underscored the Security Council’s duty to implement its resolutions effectively, safeguard civilians in the occupied Palestinian territories, and uphold the recognition of the Palestinian state in accordance with international law.
Significantly, resolution 2728, tabled by the Security Council’s 10 non-permanent members, received overwhelming support with 14 votes in favor and none against, with the United States abstaining. The resolution specifically calls for a ceasefire in Gaza during the holy month of Ramadan and emphasizes the urgent release of hostages, along with ensuring unhindered humanitarian access to Gaza.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the critical importance of implementing Resolution 2728, stating, “The Security Council just approved a long-awaited resolution on Gaza, demanding an immediate ceasefire, and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. This resolution must be implemented. Failure would be unforgivable.”
