US President-elect Donald Trump has strongly criticized President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, who had been convicted on charges related to gun crimes and tax violations. In a post on Truth Social, Trump labeled the move a “miscarriage of justice” and raised questions about the fairness of the pardon, suggesting it might have been done in part to shield Hunter Biden from consequences.
Trump’s post also took aim at the prisoners involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots, whom he refers to as “J6 hostages.” He questioned whether Biden’s pardon for his son would include those individuals, many of whom have been imprisoned for their role in the violent attack on the Capitol. Trump and his supporters have previously claimed that those arrested for the January 6 riots were unfairly treated, describing them as peaceful patriots rather than rioters. It is widely speculated that Trump, if re-elected as President, might offer pardons to those involved in the Capitol siege, echoing his longstanding defense of their actions.
President Biden signed the pardon for Hunter Biden on Sunday, clearing him of charges related to gun possession and tax violations. The pardon ensures that Hunter Biden will avoid any prison time and will not face sentencing for these offenses. Biden defended the decision in a statement, asserting that his son had been treated unfairly and that the charges brought against him were politically motivated.
In his statement, President Biden expressed that individuals in similar circumstances—such as those who have struggled with addiction and failed to pay taxes on time—often receive non-criminal resolutions. Biden argued that Hunter’s case was handled differently, with felony charges filed despite the absence of aggravating factors, such as using a weapon in a crime or making multiple purchases. He emphasized that his son had repaid the taxes with interest and penalties, and yet, Hunter was prosecuted in a way that was inconsistent with how others in similar situations are treated.
Biden also accused political opponents in Congress of instigating the charges against his son, claiming that the case was brought forward to undermine his presidency. He noted that a negotiated plea deal fell apart in court due to political pressure from his opponents. While Biden stated his belief in the justice system, he argued that politics had influenced the legal process, leading to what he considered a miscarriage of justice.
