In a tragic incident, six people, including four Pakistanis, lost their lives and nearly 30 others were wounded in a shooting near a Shiite mosque in Muscat, the capital of Oman. The attack, occurring during the Shiite commemoration of Ashura, marks a rare instance of violence in the typically peaceful country. The Royal Oman Police swiftly responded to the shooting in the Al-Wadi Al-Kabir area, confirming the death toll and the identities of those injured, including a police officer.

According to reports, three gunmen involved in the attack were killed during the incident. The gunmen reportedly targeted Shiite worshippers as they gathered for religious rituals, opening fire before engaging in a clash with Omani security forces. The Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the assault, describing it as a deliberate attack on Shiites practicing their religious observances.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Pakistan confirmed that among the deceased were four Pakistani nationals, with an additional 30 Pakistanis injured in the assault. The Indian embassy in Oman also reported casualties among Indian nationals. Footage from the scene captured chaotic scenes as worshippers fled amidst gunfire, with audible cries invoking the name of Imam Hussein, a significant figure in Shiite Islam.

Following the attack, international reactions poured in, with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemning the act of terrorism and expressing solidarity with Oman. The incident prompted heightened security measures by local authorities, including the closure of the area around the mosque and advisories for citizens to remain vigilant.

Investigations into the motive and execution of the attack are ongoing, with authorities working to gather evidence and understand the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. The community of Oman, known for its cultural tolerance and peaceful coexistence, has been shaken by this unprecedented violence targeting a minority religious group within its borders.

The attack on the Shiite mosque in Oman resonates with previous sectarian violence incidents across the Gulf region, underscoring ongoing tensions and security challenges despite efforts to maintain stability. As Oman mourns the lives lost and supports the injured, questions remain about the broader implications of this attack on national security and communal harmony.
