The Foreign Ministers of the Sultanate of Oman, Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, and the Syrian Arab Republic, Dr. Faisal Al Mekdad, engaged in a significant phone conversation on Tuesday, reaffirming their commitment to cooperation and their joint resolve to address regional and international issues. In a high-level discussion, they underscored the urgent need to de-escalate tensions and foster stability in the region.
The conversation between the two foreign ministers comes at a crucial juncture, following recent events, including the attack on US troops near the Jordan-Syria border. However, it is noteworthy that the official press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Oman did not indicate any discussion regarding this incident during their conversation.
Central to their dialogue was the shared objective of preventing the further expansion of regional conflicts. Both Oman and Syria stressed the paramount importance of halting the ongoing Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip. The ministers emphasized the urgent need to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and reaffirmed their legitimate right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Efforts to intensify for deterring Israel against using military aggression
Earlier, while condemning the recent drone attack on American personnel on the Jordanian-Syrian border, which resulted in the loss of a number of lives and the injury of a group of wounded, the Oman Foreign Ministry in a statement, ‘calls on all influential parties to intensify efforts to achieve security and stability in the region and to stop the causes of escalation and tension, starting with deterring Israel and stopping its military aggression against the defenseless Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories’.
Moreover, speaking of the possible de-escalation situation in the region, Oman Foreign Minister said, “A ceasefire in Gaza is pivotal to contain escalation and prevent a wider conflict.”
