In a significant diplomatic development, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan, engaged in a pivotal telephone conversation to tackle various bilateral issues and explore potential areas of cooperation.
A prominent topic discussed during their conversation was the resumption of Umrah (minor Hajj) flights and the prospect of a Saudi technical delegation visiting Iran. Amirabdollahian emphasized the urgency of kick-starting Umrah flights.
Both diplomats expressed their contentment with the positive trajectory of bilateral relations and underscored the imperative to bolster cooperation in areas of mutual interest. This shift in attitude signifies a noteworthy departure from the hostilities that had previously marred their diplomatic ties.
Amirabdollahian and bin Farhan also voiced their deep concerns regarding the continuous actions of the Israeli regime against the Palestinian people. In a statement issued by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, both ministers called for an immediate cessation of Israeli atrocities, the lifting of the humanitarian siege on Gaza, and the restoration of peace to the beleaguered region.
Additionally, the two foreign ministers engaged in discussions concerning regional and international developments, with a particular emphasis on the evolving situations in Gaza, the West Bank, and the Red Sea. During these talks, the Iranian foreign minister extended a cordial invitation to his Saudi counterpart to visit Tehran.
It is significant to note that the Iran and Saudi Arabia have undergone a remarkable breakthrough in relations, which was facilitated through a China-brokered deal that had paved the way for the normalization of relations that had been strained for several years.
Under the terms of the agreement, Tehran and Riyadh have mutually agreed to put an end to their diplomatic rift and restore relations that have long been under strain.
To provide context, Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016 following an attack on its embassy in Tehran by protesters. This attack was in response to Riyadh’s execution of a prominent Shiite cleric. Subsequently, relations between the two nations deteriorated, with both countries adopting opposing stances on various regional conflicts.
