Om Prakash Chautala, former Haryana Chief Minister and president of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), passed away at the age of 89. Known for his enduring influence on Haryana’s politics, Chautala breathed his last at his residence in Gurugram after battling a prolonged illness.
Born on January 1, 1935, in Chautala village, Sirsa, Om Prakash Chautala was the eldest son of Chaudhary Devi Lal, India’s former Deputy Prime Minister and Haryana’s ex-Chief Minister. Chautala inherited his father’s political legacy, emerging as a prominent voice for farmers and the Jat community. His grassroots appeal and strong connections with various political parties made him a key figure in Haryana’s political landscape.
Chautala served as Haryana’s Chief Minister four times, navigating periods of political turbulence.
First Term (1989-1990): Chautala assumed office on December 2, 1989, but his term was cut short, ending on May 22, 1990.
Second Term (1990): He returned to power briefly on July 12, 1990, but his tenure lasted just five days.
Third Term (1991): Chautala held the CM post from March 22 to April 6, 1991, facing challenges during a politically volatile period.
Fourth Term (1999-2005): His most significant term lasted from July 24, 1999, to March 5, 2005. During this time, Chautala focused on improving agriculture and rural infrastructure but faced corruption allegations that later led to his imprisonment.
Post-2005, Chautala’s political influence waned as the Congress took control of Haryana. Internal conflicts between his sons, Abhay and Ajay, led to the fragmentation of INLD. The party’s representation in the Haryana Assembly dwindled to just two seats, both held by his family members.
Despite controversies, Chautala is remembered for his dedication to rural development and advocacy for the Jat community. His contributions left an indelible mark on Haryana’s political history.
