It has been a decade since Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium last saw a completed professional match, with the infamous East Stand at the center of a £10.25m scandal involving taxpayers’ money. Now, as the club strives to bring its home ground back to full operation, questions linger about what led to the prolonged delay and when the long-awaited stand will finally be finished.
Sixfields Stadium, inaugurated in 1994, was anticipated to usher in a new era for the club, transitioning from its former shared ground with Northamptonshire County Cricket Club. However, progress towards a revamped stadium, including expanded capacity and enhanced facilities, faced setbacks.
The saga intensified in 2013 when Northampton Borough Council loaned £10.25m to the club for stadium redevelopment, a plan that also entailed constructing a hotel and conference center. Despite assurances from club owners David and Tony Cardoza, work on the East Stand ground to a halt amid unpaid contractors, triggering a police investigation into the missing funds.
Amid financial turmoil, players and staff endured weeks without pay, and the club faced liquidation threats. In 2015, under new ownership led by Kelvin Thomas, the focus shifted back to football, culminating in the club’s League Two triumph in 2016. However, the East Stand remained an unfinished shell, symbolizing the lingering fallout from the scandal.
A renewed effort to complete the stand emerged in 2021, with a deal between the club and West Northamptonshire Council paving the way for redevelopment. Despite delays due to legal challenges, work has resumed under the supervision of GRS Group, targeting completion by early 2025.
Once finished, the revamped East Stand promises to increase capacity, introduce pitch-facing hospitality, and enhance accessibility for all supporters. The project also includes additional parking, dining areas, and modernized amenities, signaling a new chapter for Northampton Town’s storied stadium.
