In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, only women police personnel will be deployed for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security during a mega event in Gujarat’s Navsari district on International Women’s Day, March 8. The unique measure, announced by Gujarat’s Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi, aims to showcase the increasing role of women in ensuring security and law enforcement.
According to Sanghavi, the all-women security detail will be responsible for every aspect of the prime minister’s safety, from his arrival at the helipad in Vansi Borsi village to the venue where he will address the ‘Lakhpati Didi Sammelan.’ The security team will include officers from all ranks, ensuring a well-coordinated operation.
More than 2,100 women constables, 187 sub-inspectors, 61 police inspectors, 16 deputy superintendents of police, five superintendents of police (SPs), one Inspector General of Police (IGP), and one Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) will be deployed for the event. The security arrangements will be supervised by senior IPS officer and Home Secretary Nipuna Torawane.
This initiative, marking the first time an all-women police force will handle a prime ministerial security operation, is expected to send a strong message on gender empowerment. It underscores the crucial role women play in ensuring safety and security in Gujarat and across the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli on March 8 and 9. His address at the ‘Lakhpati Didi Sammelan’ will focus on empowering women entrepreneurs and self-help groups, in line with the government’s efforts to strengthen women-led development.
The move to have an all-women security team aligns with the broader efforts of the Gujarat government to promote women in leadership roles across different sectors. Officials believe this step will inspire more women to join law enforcement and contribute to maintaining public safety at the highest levels.
With this historic decision, Gujarat aims to set a precedent for gender-inclusive security arrangements at high-profile events. It also highlights the state’s commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for women in traditionally male-dominated fields like policing and security management.
