Labour has clinched control of Thurrock Council in Essex, marking a significant shift from the previous no overall control status. The unitary council, which faced bankruptcy under Conservative leadership in 2022, saw Labour gain ground with eight seats, while Independent candidates secured two seats. The Tories suffered a loss of 10 seats out of the 17 up for grabs.
The outcome reflects a broader trend in the region, with counts underway in eight other councils across Essex. Thurrock, a crucial constituency represented by Conservative MP Jackie Doyle-Price, is seen as pivotal in national elections.
Doyle-Price expressed disappointment at the results, attributing them to a subdued national sentiment and a decline in voter turnout among traditional Conservative supporters. She emphasized the need for the party to bolster its efforts ahead of the upcoming general election.
In Harlow, the Conservatives are projected to maintain a slim majority, holding 17 seats to Labour’s 16 in a contest for all 33 council seats. However, Rochford District Council now lacks a single-party majority, with the Conservatives losing ground to Liberal Democrat and Independent candidates.
Similarly, Colchester City Council remains without a dominant party, with Labour gaining one seat from the Liberal Democrats. In Southend-on-Sea, Labour emerges as the largest party with 20 seats, followed by the Conservatives with 18. Labour aims to form partnerships to assume control of the council, with notable gains from the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.
Turnout figures vary marginally across councils, with Southend-on-Sea experiencing a slight increase to 30.74%. Harlow saw a turnout of 28.33%, while Colchester witnessed a minor decrease to 30.31%.
Results from five additional councils, including Basildon, Brentwood, Castle Point, Epping Forest, and Harlow, are expected to follow later.
