North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reaffirmed the importance of enhancing the country’s space reconnaissance capabilities for national self-defence against potential threats. Despite a recent setback in the failed launch of a spy satellite, Kim Jong Un expressed determination to continue efforts to develop this crucial capability.
During his visit to the country’s Academy of Defence Sciences, Kim Jong Un emphasized the significance of possessing military reconnaissance satellites to bolster national self-defence deterrence and safeguard sovereignty and security from perceived threats, particularly from US military actions and provocations.
While acknowledging the unsuccessful satellite launch, Kim Jong Un urged resilience and perseverance, emphasizing the importance of learning from failure to advance further. He emphasized the need to intensify efforts in the pursuit of space reconnaissance capabilities.
Although the recent launch experienced technical difficulties resulting in failure, experts noted significant advancements in North Korea’s space program, particularly in propulsion technology. The use of a new engine fueled by liquid oxygen and petroleum suggests potential assistance from Russia, marking a notable leap forward in North Korea’s space ambitions.
North Korea and Russia have strengthened military cooperation since a summit between their leaders last year, potentially contributing to advancements in North Korea’s space program.
Despite international scrutiny and criticism, North Korea has persistently pursued satellite launches, successfully placing satellites in orbit in previous attempts. Kim Jong Un’s speech underscores the strategic importance of space reconnaissance in North Korea’s military doctrine.
Kim Jong Un also criticized South Korea for its response to the satellite launch, accusing Seoul of “playing with fire” by engaging in shows of force and conducting military drills involving fighter jets. South Korea responded by deploying fighter jets, including F-35 stealth fighters, to conduct attack drills in a demonstration of readiness.
The escalation of military activities between North and South Korea highlights ongoing tensions in the region, with both sides conducting separate drills near their maritime border.
Kim Jong Un’s remarks underscore North Korea’s commitment to advancing its space capabilities despite setbacks, signalling continued focus on enhancing its military capabilities.
