Vice President Kamala Harris has gone 72 days without holding a formal press conference since becoming the official Democratic nominee for president. Despite being the presumptive nominee for weeks and now officially leading the Democratic ticket, Kamala Harris has yet to address the press in a traditional conference setting. This contrasts with former President Donald Trump, who held his third press conference since August last month in California, using the platform to discuss topics such as crime, immigration, and inflation while also criticizing Kamala Harris’s home state.
Although Kamala Harris has refrained from formal press conferences, she has increased her media presence through interviews. In recent weeks, she has appeared on various radio shows, had a solo interview with a Philadelphia TV station, and spoke with MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle. Additionally, Kamala Harris made a notable appearance with media mogul Oprah Winfrey at a high-profile campaign event last month. However, despite these public appearances, there is uncertainty over whether Harris will ever conduct a formal press conference during her candidacy.
Critics, particularly from conservative media, have been vocal about Kamala Harris’s avoidance of formal press engagement. Jorge Bonilla, host of Conservative Radio Libre, expressed skepticism about Kamala Harris holding a press conference, claiming the media has enabled her to adopt a “plexiglass basement” strategy. This approach, according to Bonilla, allows Harris to maintain the appearance of being active while remaining inaccessible to the press, thus avoiding direct accountability.
In one of her recent interviews in Philadelphia, Kamala Harris discussed her economic policies, drawing from her middle-class upbringing. However, her response received sharp criticism for its lack of specificity. When asked about her economic policy, Kamala Harris said, “You know, I grew up in a neighborhood of folks who were very proud of their lawn. And I was raised to believe and to know that all people deserve dignity, and that we as Americans have a beautiful character… not everyone necessarily has access to the resources that can help them fuel those dreams and ambitions.”
Kamala Harris went on to explain her vision for an “opportunity economy,” focusing on investing in the ambitions and aspirations of the American people. She emphasized the need for economic policies that would enable people to start small businesses, reinforcing her campaign’s focus on economic empowerment. However, the general lack of direct press conferences has left many questioning her willingness to engage with the media on these critical topics.
As the campaign progresses, it remains unclear when, or if, Kamala Harris will hold a formal press conference, leaving many observers awaiting her full engagement with the press.
