India is set to launch a FASTag Annual Pass on August 15, offering car, jeep, and van owners the option to travel on National Highways and Expressways without worrying about per-trip toll charges, capping usage at one year or 200 trips, whichever comes first. Introduced by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, the pass is designed to ease travel, reduce transaction delays at toll plazas, and provide a cost-effective alternative for frequent highway users while retaining the flexibility of the current FASTag system for those who prefer pay-per-use.
Where and How to Activate the Pass ?
The FASTag Annual Pass will be available exclusively through the Rajmargyatra mobile app and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) website, ensuring a digital-first rollout to prevent crowding at physical toll points. Activation will require verification of the vehicle’s eligibility and its linked FASTag, with a payment of ₹3,000 for the base year 2025-26 to complete the process. Once verified, the pass will be activated within two hours on the registered FASTag, ready for use without requiring a new tag for existing FASTag users, provided the tag is affixed correctly, linked to a valid Vehicle Registration Number (VRN), and is not blacklisted.
Importantly, users whose FASTag is registered only with a chassis number will need to update their registration to include a valid VRN before applying for the Annual Pass. This ensures clear linkage between the vehicle and the pass, reducing misuse and enabling smooth toll transactions under the new system.
Validity, Usage, and Key Conditions
The FASTag Annual Pass is valid for a maximum of one year from the activation date or 200 transactions (trips), whichever limit is reached first, after which the tag will automatically revert to regular FASTag mode for per-trip charges. A single trip is defined as one crossing at a point-based fee plaza, while a round trip counts as two trips. For closed tolling fee plazas, one pair of entry and exit counts as one trip.
Users should note that the pass is non-transferable, tied to the specific vehicle on which the FASTag is affixed and registered. Attempting to use the pass on a different vehicle will result in automatic deactivation, ensuring system integrity and preventing pass misuse.
The pass is optional, and the current FASTag system will continue to operate unchanged for those who do not wish to opt for the annual payment model. This flexibility allows users to evaluate their travel frequency before deciding on purchasing the pass, as occasional highway users may find the existing pay-per-trip model more suitable.
A Step Towards Seamless Highway Travel
Minister Gadkari emphasised that the FASTag Annual Pass aims to simplify the highway travel experience by eliminating repetitive per-trip transactions for regular commuters, reducing congestion at toll booths, and promoting a smoother movement of vehicles on India’s expanding highway network. As India moves towards modernising road infrastructure and digital toll management, the Annual Pass is expected to benefit a significant portion of daily and weekly highway travellers, particularly in urban clusters where highway commuting is frequent.
The launch of the FASTag Annual Pass reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to digitise travel, improve convenience for vehicle owners, and reduce administrative friction at toll plazas while keeping compliance and accountability in check. Users keen on availing the pass are encouraged to download the Rajmargyatra app or visit the NHAI website to register and activate their passes ahead of the Independence Day launch, ensuring they are ready for seamless travel when the system goes live on August 15.
