In a proud moment for India’s security forces, BSF Assistant Commandant Neha Bhandari was felicitated with the prestigious Commendation Disc by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi for her exceptional courage and leadership during Operation Sindoor. Neha Bhandari led her unit with remarkable composure and strength under enemy fire, demonstrating extraordinary operational proficiency.

Neha Bhandari commanded a forward-deployed unit of the Border Security Force in the Pargwal area of the Akhnoor sector in Jammu and Kashmir, barely 150 metres from a Pakistani post. Under extreme conditions, she directed a strong and effective counter-response to enemy fire, successfully silencing three hostile forward posts across the zero line, a region perilously close to enemy territory.

From a legacy of service to battlefield heroism

Neha Bhandari’s bravery isn’t just a matter of duty but also legacy. A third-generation officer, she comes from a family deeply rooted in India’s defence services. Her grandfather served in the Indian Army, while both her parents are officers in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Speaking to PTI, she expressed pride in continuing her family’s tradition and leading a unit positioned so close to the international border.

“It’s an honour to man a post just 150 metres from the Pakistani position,” she said. “My grandfather was in the Army. My father and mother are both with the CRPF. I feel proud to follow their path.”

Women at the frontline

Alongside Neha Bhandari, six women constables also played crucial roles during Operation Sindoor. These constables manned gun positions at forward posts across Samba, RS Pura, and Akhnoor. Their confidence reportedly grew with each exchange of fire as they held their ground with courage and precision.

Operation Sindoor was India’s military response to the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam’s Basram Valley on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. The mission, involving precision retaliation against terror positions, showcased the commitment and strength of India’s forces, with Neha Bhandari emerging as a standout figure for her fearless leadership on the frontlines.
