In a heated moment during the Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) match against Delhi Capitals (DC), captain Rishabh Pant exploded in the dugout after his late entry to the crease. Despite LSG needing a solid finish, Rishabh Pant came in at No. 7, which led to visible frustration. His animated conversation with mentor Zaheer Khan reflected his displeasure at being sent in so late. This frustration seemed to stem from his desire to bat higher up in the order, which he had previously requested but was not granted, resulting in a disheartening day for both him and the team.
LSG was in a precarious position after Nicholas Pooran’s dismissal in the 12th over, leaving the team at 99 for 2. Many expected Rishabh Pant to step up, but instead, Abdul Samad came out to bat, followed by David Miller and Ayush Badoni. Even though the right-left combination of Samad replacing Pooran seemed logical, Rishabh Pant’s absence was puzzling. This delayed entry, along with the dismissals of Samad and Mitchell Marsh soon after, turned the game in DC’s favor. Rishabh Pant finally made his appearance with just two balls left in the innings but failed to make an impact, being bowled out in the final delivery.
As soon as Rishabh Pant’s stumps were hit, his frustration was evident. He stormed off the field, and his reaction raised questions about the timing of his entry to the crease. Former cricketers Anil Kumble and Suresh Raina speculated that his outburst was less about the dismissal itself and more about the decision to send him in at such a late stage. Rishabh Pant had been visibly upset in the dugout, and his conversation with Zaheer Khan suggested it was related to his batting position.
Suresh Raina noted that Rishabh Pant was voicing his frustration to Zaheer, saying, “I told you, send me in,” clearly pointing to his earlier plea for a higher spot in the batting order. Kumble agreed, stating that while Rishabh Pant’s emotions were understandable, his reaction as a captain should have been more measured. Kumble suggested that Rishabh Pant should have channeled his frustration into a more positive performance rather than displaying visible anger.
Despite Rishabh Pant’s frustration, the team’s collapse to 159/6 meant that LSG fell short against DC. After the match, Rishabh Pant reflected on the batting strategy, admitting that they needed to reassess their approach to find the right balance moving forward.
