Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is set to embark on a major renovation project for its Terminal 1 (T1) this year, marking a significant shift in the city’s airport infrastructure. The revamp, which aims to enhance the terminal’s capacity to handle an additional 20 million passengers annually, is expected to lead to substantial changes in the travel experience at one of India’s busiest airports. The renovation is projected to be completed by 2029, transforming the terminal into a state-of-the-art facility.
As part of the renovation process, millions of passengers who typically fly from Terminal 1 will be redirected to two alternate terminals. The CSMIA’s Terminal 2 (T2) will handle the increased volume of traffic, and the newly constructed Navi Mumbai International Airport will serve as another key hub for passengers during this period. Both T2 and Navi Mumbai International Airport are expected to manage the overflow of travelers while the essential upgrades are being carried out on T1.
The redevelopment plan is designed to enhance the terminal’s capacity by 42%, bringing it up to a total capacity of 20 million passengers per year, a substantial increase from its current capacity. The improvements will not only cater to growing passenger traffic but also help the airport handle increasing demands from both domestic and international flights.
According to an official statement by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), the transformation of Terminal 1 will be a phased process, beginning in November 2025. The construction work will be strategically planned to minimize disruption for travelers, ensuring that Terminal 2 absorbs the additional traffic during the renovation. The project is set to be completed in stages over the next eight years, with the final upgrades expected to be fully operational by 2029.
The first phase of the renovation will involve the construction of a new terminal alongside the modernization of the existing one. This work is expected to be completed within three years, contributing to an enhanced passenger experience. The revamped Terminal 1 will feature a range of improvements, including a more efficient baggage handling system, new multipurpose substations, and extensive landscaping for improved cooling and aesthetic appeal.
The new upgrades will coincide with an expansion of the current Passenger Terminal Building, designed to handle a higher number of domestic passengers, and there is potential for the merging of international operations as well. The upgrades promise to elevate the terminal’s infrastructure, aligning it with global standards and increasing operational efficiency.
Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which operates the CSMIA, is managed by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL). The ambitious renovation is expected to cater to the ever-growing air travel demand in the region, which has seen a steady rise in passenger numbers in recent years. With the projected improvements to Terminal 1, Mumbai’s airport will be better equipped to serve a larger number of passengers while enhancing the overall travel experience.
The expansion and modernization of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is part of a broader vision to accommodate the increasing influx of travelers, positioning the city as a critical hub for both domestic and international air traffic. As the redevelopment moves forward, authorities are confident that the new look and upgraded infrastructure will allow the airport to meet future demands, providing a seamless and more comfortable experience for all passengers.
