China has expressed its readiness to collaborate with India to implement key common understandings between the two countries, aiming to restore bilateral relations and address differences through dialogue. The Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized the importance of mutual respect for each other’s core interests and concerns, and the need to strengthen trust through communication to resolve issues with sincerity and goodwill.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian reiterated that China is committed to working with India to bring the relationship back to a path of stable and healthy development. This declaration comes ahead of a crucial meeting between National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Wednesday. The two leaders will hold the 23rd round of Special Representative talks, which are expected to focus on managing the long-standing border issue between the two nations.
These talks will be the first high-level discussions on the border dispute since December 2019. The main agenda will be the management of peace and tranquility along the China-India border, with a view to finding a fair and mutually acceptable resolution to the boundary question. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has stated that the talks will seek to improve relations and address the complex issues surrounding the border areas.
India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, recently informed Parliament that disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh has been completed successfully, with key areas such as Depsang and Demchok seeing progress. He also highlighted that maintaining peace along the border remains a critical precondition for the development of India-China relations.
The border standoff between India and China, which began in 2020 in Eastern Ladakh, was triggered by Chinese military actions along the LAC. This conflict led to severe diplomatic and military tensions, impacting bilateral ties. However, in October of this year, both countries reached an agreement on patrolling arrangements along the border, marking a step forward in efforts to stabilize the situation.
During a meeting at the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the priority for both countries should be maintaining peace and stability along the border, and that mutual trust should form the foundation of their bilateral relationship. As the Doval-Wang Yi talks approach, all eyes are on the two leaders to see if they can lay the groundwork for a more stable and cooperative relationship between the two nations.
