The Pune police arrested Shivani Agarwal, mother of the teen accused of running over two techies with his Porsche last month, on charges of tampering with evidence. The arrest was made after it was confirmed that her son’s blood samples had been swapped with hers, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar told PTI.
Shivani Agarwal was apprehended upon her return to Pune from Mumbai on Friday night. She is expected to be produced in court today. The arrest follows police revelations that the blood samples of the teen, who was involved in the fatal accident, were replaced with those of a woman to indicate he was not intoxicated at the time.
The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report showing no alcohol in the teen’s initial blood sample had raised suspicions. Subsequent tests conducted at a different hospital, along with DNA analysis, confirmed that the samples were from two different individuals.
The incident occurred in the early hours of May 19 in Kalyani Nagar, Pune, when a Porsche allegedly driven by a drunk minor collided with a motorcycle, killing two IT professionals. The 17-year-old has since been placed in an observation home. His father, realtor Vishal Agarwal, and grandfather, Surendra Agarwal, have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping the family driver and coercing him to take the blame for the accident.
Shivani Agarwal had been absconding since the arrests of Dr. Shrihari Halnor and Dr. Ajay Tawade, who were detained for allegedly disposing of the teen’s blood sample and substituting it with another individual’s. The police had been actively searching for her prior to her capture.
The investigation continues as authorities seek to hold all parties accountable for their roles in the cover-up of the tragic accident.
