In the wake of the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the mother-in-law of the accused, Sanjay Roy, has suggested that more people may have been involved in the crime. Durga Devi, who is related to Sanjay Roy, spoke to ANI on Monday, highlighting the tension in her relationship with the accused and expressing doubts about his sole involvement in the crime.
Durga Devi recounted her daughter’s troubled relationship with Sanjay Roy, describing how their initial harmony deteriorated over time. She noted that Roy had physically abused her daughter, resulting in a miscarriage when she was three months pregnant. A police complaint was lodged against Roy for this abuse. Devi also mentioned that she had to cover her daughter’s medical expenses during this period.
“I had a very tense relationship with Sanjay,” Devi said. “Initially, everything was good for six months. When she was three months pregnant, he caused a miscarriage and thrashed her. We had to file a police complaint, and I bore all her medical expenses as she continued to be ill.”
Regarding the current case, Devi stated, “Sanjay was not good. Hang him or do whatever you want with him. I won’t speak about the crime, but he couldn’t have done it alone. He can’t do it alone.”
The tragic case of the trainee doctor has sparked widespread outrage and protests across India, with calls for stringent justice for the accused. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, with Chief Justice DY Chandrachud’s bench set to hear it today.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been authorized to perform a polygraph test on Sanjay Roy. Earlier, on August 18, the CBI conducted a 3D laser mapping of the emergency ward at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the deceased was found.
In addition, the West Bengal government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital from January 2021 to the present. The SIT, led by IG Pranav Kumar and assisted by other senior officers, is tasked with accessing relevant documents and submitting a preliminary report within a month.
The victim, a postgraduate trainee doctor, was discovered dead on August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The investigation continues as authorities seek to unravel the details surrounding this heinous crime.
