  • Mark Carney hints at resetting strained Canada-India ties if elected.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has hinted at a major reset in ties with India if he returns to power, calling the relationship “incredibly important” on personal, economic, and strategic levels. As Canada heads to the polls, Mark Carney’s remarks reflect a shift towards repairing strained relations, with both sides signaling openness for rebuilding trust after months of diplomatic tension.

Speaking at a rally in King City, Ontario, Mark Carney emphasized the value of strong Canada-India ties, highlighting the deep personal connections and significant economic opportunities between the two countries. Without directly mentioning the controversy around the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023, he acknowledged the existing strains and expressed confidence that issues could be addressed through mutual respect and dialogue.

Campaign promises reflect a strategic pivot

Mark Carney’s comments come at a crucial time, just ahead of the Federal election where his Liberal Party is expected to secure a majority. He stressed that Canada and India, amid global economic upheavals and uncertainty sparked by the US trade war, could play vital roles in promoting an open and cooperative international system. Mark Carney described this moment as an opportunity to reset the relationship and to build a shared economic future.

This is not the first time Mark Carney has called for deeper ties with India. During his leadership campaign, he repeatedly mentioned the need for new allies, explicitly naming India as a key partner. He reiterated similar sentiments days later, signaling that diversifying Canada’s trade relations would be a top priority under his leadership.

Warming signals from both Ottawa and New Delhi

The momentum for improved ties has also been gaining from within Mark Carney’s Cabinet. Senior ministers have privately assured Indo-Canadian groups that Mark Carney maintains strong relationships with key figures in New Delhi, which they hope to leverage for a “major reset” in bilateral relations.

Analysts suggest that a high-profile invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the upcoming G7 Leaders’ Summit could be a key step in mending ties. Additionally, proposals for a formal inquiry into the Nijjar case have been floated as a gesture to rebuild trust.

Both nations are reportedly preparing to appoint new High Commissioners once Canada’s new government is formed. Adding to the positive signals, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has also expressed hope for restoring ties based on mutual trust and sensitivity.
