  • Mamata calls for peace and unity during communal tensions in Bengal.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a fervent appeal for communal harmony and unity, emphasizing the need to avoid falling into provocations that could fuel religious riots. Speaking at an Eid prayers programme on Red Road in Kolkata on Monday, March 31, 2025, Banerjee assured the people of West Bengal that her government would stand firm against any efforts to disrupt peace in the state, particularly highlighting the importance of safeguarding the interests and well-being of the minority communities.

Addressing a large gathering at the Eid prayers, Banerjee expressed her concern over the rising attempts to create unrest, warning that certain forces were deliberately trying to provoke conflicts for their own political gain. She said, “Provocations are being made to fuel riots, but please don’t fall into these traps.” With a direct appeal to the people, she urged them to remain vigilant and avoid being swayed by divisive tactics that threatened the state’s social fabric.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to ensuring peace and security for all citizens, particularly the minorities, and stated that West Bengal would remain a place where unity prevailed over divisiveness. She further asserted that her government would act decisively to maintain peace and that no one would be allowed to disturb the state’s tranquil atmosphere. “The West Bengal government stands with the minorities. No one can provoke tensions in the state,” she said, sending a clear message to anyone attempting to disturb the communal harmony.

In her address, Banerjee also took a strong stand against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing the party of engaging in politics of division. She questioned the BJP’s stance towards the minority communities, asking provocatively, “If they (BJP) have problems with the minorities, will they change the Constitution of the country?” Her comments were a direct rebuttal to the BJP’s divisive rhetoric, and Banerjee made it clear that her government would not tolerate any attempt to weaken the inclusive spirit that defines West Bengal.

The Chief Minister’s remarks come at a time when tensions have been running high in various parts of the country over issues related to religious identity and community-based politics. Banerjee’s statements resonated with many who are wary of the growing polarization in Indian politics. The Trinamool Congress leader has long been a vocal critic of the BJP’s approach, especially its handling of minority rights and its alleged role in sowing discord among the country’s diverse communities.

Mamata Banerjee’s call for unity is also reflective of the broader political climate in West Bengal, where the ruling TMC has consistently positioned itself as a defender of secularism and inclusive politics. Her government has been engaged in a series of efforts to ensure that the diverse population of the state, including both Hindus and Muslims, live together in harmony, resisting any attempts by external forces to ignite religious tensions.

In her speech, Banerjee highlighted the festive occasion of Eid as an opportunity for people to come together and celebrate their shared values of peace, love, and brotherhood. She reminded the attendees of the importance of tolerance and mutual respect, stressing that these values were essential for the progress and prosperity of society as a whole.

The Chief Minister’s address has been seen as an attempt to rally the people of West Bengal around a message of unity at a time when divisive forces threaten to erode the social cohesion that has long been a hallmark of the state. Her remarks were also a clear indication that she would continue to fight against any attempts to divide communities for political gain, particularly in the face of growing tensions in various parts of the country.
