The Maharashtra government has taken a strong stance on the controversy surrounding stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, who has been criticized for his remarks about Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stated that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has made it clear that any action against Kunal Kamra will be taken strictly as per the law. The controversy has sparked a political debate, with the government emphasizing that while political satire is acceptable, freedom of expression should not lead to disrespect or disorder.
Addressing reporters on Tuesday, Ajit Pawar reaffirmed the government’s position, saying that CM Devendra Fadnavis had already responded on the matter, making it clear that legal measures will be followed. The remarks made by Kunal Kamra, which allegedly targeted Eknath Shinde, have drawn sharp reactions from political leaders, with the government maintaining that certain boundaries must be respected in public discourse.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, speaking in the state assembly, took a firm stance against Kunal Kamra’s remarks, stating that while humor and satire are welcome, misuse of freedom of expression to create anarchy will not be tolerated. He described Kunal Kamra’s act as “low-quality comedy,” accusing the comedian of seeking publicity by making controversial statements. He further stated that Kunal Kamra had previously made comments about the Prime Minister and the Chief Justice, and his recent remarks against Eknath Shinde were yet another attempt to gain attention through controversy.
Devendra Fadnavis also defended Eknath Shinde, calling him the rightful heir to Balasaheb Thackeray’s legacy. He criticized the opposition for allegedly supporting Kunal Kamra’s remarks and questioned whether they had encouraged the comedian’s actions. Referring to Kunal Kamra’s social media posts, including one where he posted an image of the Constitution, Devendra Fadnavis claimed that if Kunal Kamra had truly understood the Constitution, he would not have made such statements.
The Shiv Sena has also strongly objected to Kunal Kamra’s comments, labeling them as an insult to their leader. The incident has escalated tensions, leading to protests from Shiv Sena workers who vandalized ‘The Habitat,’ a venue in Mumbai where Kunal Kamra performed. The opposition alliance in Maharashtra has, however, criticized the state government, accusing it of misusing power and suppressing freedom of expression.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Police have summoned Kunal Kamra for questioning, asking him to appear before the investigating officer. However, reports suggest that Kunal Kamra is currently not in Mumbai. The FIR registered against him at the MIDC police station has been transferred to Khar police for further investigation. The legal proceedings continue as authorities examine whether Kunal Kamra’s remarks warrant further action under existing laws.
