A lip reader’s interpretation of a brief conversation between former United States Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush during Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony has captured widespread attention online. Jackie Gonzalez, a hearing-impaired lip reader known for decoding the private exchanges of public figures, shared her interpretation of the interaction on social media, sparking a mix of amusement and curiosity among viewers.
The video clip, now viral, begins with Barack Obama entering the Capitol Rotunda and greeting other dignitaries before taking his seat at the dais alongside former presidents. Moments later, he is seen exchanging a few words and a laugh with George W. Bush. According to Jackie Gonzalez, Barack Obama started by greeting George W. Bush with a casual, “Good to see you,” and then, in a more lighthearted tone, reportedly asked, “How can we stop what’s happening?”
Jackie Gonzalez’s interpretation has fueled speculation about whether Barack Obama was referring to Donald Trump’s return to power, but there is no concrete evidence to confirm this. NDTV noted that it cannot independently verify the accuracy of the lip reader’s claims, leaving the remarks open to interpretation.
The alleged conversation has sparked a wave of reactions on social media. Many users have expressed amusement, with one commenting, “It looks like that’s what he said, but only they know. I wouldn’t be surprised though.” Another added, “If he did say that, it’s clearly a joke. Notice how he laughed because there is no possible way to stop what’s happening.”
The event also saw notable absences and deviations from tradition. Barack Obama attended the ceremony without his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, who opted not to join him. No official reason was given for her absence. Michelle Obama also skipped the recent funeral service for former President Jimmy Carter, marking her absence as unique among all living current and former presidents and first ladies.
Additionally, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton declined to attend Donald Trump’s traditional inaugural lunch, signaling a departure from customary bipartisan displays of unity.
Donald Trump took the oath of office on Monday to “preserve, protect, and defend” the United States Constitution at 10:30 PM IST (5 PM GMT). Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath, while Donald Trump’s vice president, J.D. Vance, was sworn in shortly before him.
The interaction between Barack Obama and George W. Bush has added an intriguing element to an already notable inauguration, reflecting the charged atmosphere surrounding Donald Trump’s return to power.
