Comedian Kunal Kamra has garnered an overwhelming show of support from fans after his controversial remarks aimed at Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Following Kunal Kamra’s comedy roast, fans from across the globe have come forward with financial contributions in an outpouring of solidarity. Donations have ranged from Rs 40 to Rs 10,000 in India, with supporters also contributing in foreign currencies. This unprecedented level of support has seen contributions totaling several lakhs.
Kunal Kamra’s fans are now calling on him to initiate a fundraiser to cover potential legal fees that may arise from the fallout of his fearless comedy. Some even expressed their admiration for the comedian’s show, with one user noting, “Someone donated $400 (around 37,000 INR) – Kunal Kamra’s new show really touched many souls. I’ve never seen this many people donate on YouTube videos, even though Kunal never asked for donations.”
The surge of support comes after Kunal Kamra made headlines for his remarks during a show at Mumbai’s Habitat studio. In his parody of the 1997 Bollywood hit song “Bholi Si Surat,” Kunal Kamra took a jab at Eknath Shinde, referring to him as a “gaddar” (traitor) and mocking his role in the 2022 rebellion that led to the downfall of Uddhav Thackeray’s government. Kunal Kamra’s sharp satire resonated with his audience, but it sparked anger among Shiv Sena workers, who vandalized the Habitat studio, a well-known venue for stand-up performances.
Eknath Shinde, though distancing himself from the attack, defended the actions of his supporters, stating that “Every action has a reaction.” He further questioned who might have given Kunal Kamra a “supari” (contract) to target him, fueling further controversy. In the aftermath, the Habitat studio faced additional pressure, with civic authorities launching a demolition drive over alleged building code violations.
Amid the chaos, the venue announced it would temporarily close, issuing a statement clarifying that they were not responsible for the content performed by comedians. The studio emphasized that while they had no involvement in the material presented, the ongoing backlash against them had prompted a reassessment of their role in hosting such events. Despite the challenges, Kunal Kamra’s online presence continues to grow, with 2.5 million subscribers on YouTube, and his supporters remain unwavering in their commitment to him.
