Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader PC George has been remanded to 14-day police custody by the Erattupetta Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in connection with a hate speech case. Following the court’s order, PC George was taken to Kottayam Medical College for a medical check-up after reports suggested that he had health issues. The development comes after the Kerala High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea, leading him to surrender before the Erattupetta court in Kottayam.
The case against PC George stems from a controversial statement he made during a television debate in January, where he allegedly made communal remarks targeting Muslims. His comments, which were widely criticized, prompted a complaint by a Muslim Youth League leader, leading to legal proceedings against him. The Erattupetta police subsequently registered a case against him under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Kerala Police Act, including Sections BNS 196(1)(a), 299, and 120(o).
Following his remarks, the police attempted to arrest him at his residence in Poonjar near Erattupetta. However, he was not present at home, leading to a delay in the legal process. He had previously sought two days to appear before the court. Eventually, after his anticipatory bail plea was denied, he surrendered before the court, resulting in his remand to police custody. Initially, the court had sent him to custody until 6 pm, citing a defect in the custody application filed by the police. The authorities were directed to rectify the issue and resubmit the application, after which he was officially remanded for 14 days.
Amid growing criticism and legal action, PC George issued an apology for his remarks via a Facebook post. In his statement, he retracted his controversial comment and extended an apology to the Muslim community, acknowledging that his words may have caused hurt. He stated, “I unconditionally retract my reply that all Muslims in India are terrorists, and I apologize to all my Muslim brothers and sisters who love this country and were hurt by it.” However, he maintained that a small percentage of people within the community held anti-national extremist thoughts, and he would continue to oppose such elements.
PC George’s arrest and subsequent remand have sparked political discussions in Kerala, with reactions coming from various quarters. His remarks and the legal proceedings against him have once again highlighted the ongoing concerns regarding communal rhetoric and hate speech in public discourse. Law enforcement agencies have reiterated their commitment to taking strict action against those making inflammatory statements that could disturb communal harmony.
As PC George remains in police custody, further legal proceedings are expected in the coming days. The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with political observers watching the case’s developments and its broader implications in Kerala’s political landscape.
