  • Government orders inquiry to identify lapses in stampede incident.
  • New SOP to prevent tragedies at large public events.

The Karnataka government has announced plans to implement a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for major public events and celebrations, following the tragic stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium in Bengaluru that claimed 11 lives. Home Minister G Parameshwara emphasized the need for stringent measures to prevent such incidents in the future, especially during large gatherings like the IPL victory celebrations of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The government is committed to identifying the lapses that led to this disaster and ensuring that future events comply strictly with safety protocols.

Strict Measures and Accountability to Prevent Recurrence
Home Minister Parameshwara highlighted that the government would take firm steps to investigate and address the shortcomings that contributed to the stampede. The incident, which occurred during celebrations for RCB’s IPL win, resulted in 11 deaths and left 56 people injured. Among the injured, 46 have already been discharged after treatment, while 10 are still hospitalized but in stable condition. Parameshwara pointed out the tragic loss of many young lives, mostly between the ages of 20 and 25, who came to celebrate but ended up victims of the chaos. He stressed that all future mega events, meetings, and public celebrations must strictly follow police department guidelines to ensure public safety.

Inquiry and Actions Underway
Following the tragedy, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah convened a meeting and ordered a magisterial inquiry to be led by the Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner. Parameshwara assured that strict action would be taken against any individuals or authorities found responsible for negligence or lapses. While details remain limited due to the ongoing investigation, the government’s response signals a serious commitment to accountability and improved safety measures at public events.

With the new SOPs on the horizon, Karnataka aims to restore public confidence in safety arrangements for large-scale events and prevent such heartbreaking incidents from occurring again. The tragedy has also prompted a broader reflection on event management and crowd control standards in the state.
