Hours after U.S. President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, Democratic fundraising group ActBlue reported a record-breaking single-day fundraising haul.
“As of 9pm ET, grassroots supporters have raised $46.7 million through ActBlue following Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign launch. This has been the biggest fundraising day of the 2024 cycle,” the group posted on X. ActBlue facilitates online fundraising for Democratic candidates.
Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw, although anticipated, came unexpectedly as he recovered from Covid-19 at his Delaware beach house. In a letter posted on X, Joe Biden described serving as president as the “greatest honor of my life” and stated he would address the nation later in the week. The White House announced that he had no public events scheduled for Monday.
“While it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Joe Biden wrote. He also offered his “full support and endorsement” for Kamala Harris, with his campaign officially changing its name to “Harris for President.”
Endorsements for Kamala Harris quickly followed from prominent Democratic figures and potential rivals for the nomination, including California Governor Gavin Newsom.
