In a significant political development, the newly appointed Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Champai Soren, secured a decisive victory in the floor test held in the state assembly on Monday. The trust vote, a crucial test of the government’s stability, saw Champai Soren receiving the support of 47 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), while 29 were in opposition.
The Jharkhand Assembly Speaker, Rabindra Nath Mahato, presided over the proceedings, requesting members of the House to express their support or opposition to the motion. After the count, Speaker Mahato announced, “(A total of) 47 votes have been received in favor of the motion. There were 29 votes against the motion. Thus, this House passes the trust vote,” leading to the adjournment of the House until 11 am on Tuesday.
To form a government in Jharkhand, a political party needs a majority of 41 members in the 81-member assembly. Significantly, Champai Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) currently holds 29 seats, with its allies, the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), contributing 16 and one seat, respectively, to the coalition.
Earlier, Chief Minister Champai Soren, while initiating the debate on the trust motion, voiced concerns about the alleged misuse of central agencies. He stated, “The one who is ruling the Central government misused agencies. In 2019, Hemant got the mandate. Such a Chief Minister is arrested in a land scam case,” expressing his support for his predecessor’s stance.
Thank You for supporting
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the newly sworn in Chief Minister expressed gratitude to all the MLAs who have supported his government. “Thanks to all the honorable MLAs included in the alliance for supporting our government during the trust vote in Jharkhand Assembly. Our unity foiled the conspiracy to destabilize the state. By giving impetus to the schemes started by Hemant Babu, our government will try to bring about a change in the standard of living of the tribals, indigenous people, Dalits and common people of the state,” he said.
Soren’s Arrest and Swift Transition of Power
Champai Soren was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Jharkhand on February 2, following the resignation of former Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Hemant Soren’s abrupt exit from office was followed by his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with an alleged land scam case.
Remarkably, Hemant Soren, despite his arrest, was present in the Assembly to attend the crucial floor test. He was granted special permission by a court in Ranchi to participate in the trust vote.
Speaking in state assembly, the former Chief Minister made a scathing attack on the Jharkhand Governor and the BJP. In his statment, Hemant Soren accused the Governor CP Radhakrishnan’s involvement in his arrest. He stated, “I believe that Raj Bhavan was also involved in this incident.”
Hemant Soren also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of harboring a hidden agenda. He claimed that the BJP did not want a tribal Chief Minister to complete a full five-year term in office in Jharkhand. “Today I have been arrested on charges of an 8.5-acre land scam. If they have the courage, then show the documents of the land registered in my name. If it is proven, I will quit politics,” he challenged his detractors.
