The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has historically dominated Lok Sabha elections in Jharkhand, encountered a significant setback on Tuesday as it lost all five tribal constituencies in the state – Khunti, Singhbhum, Lohardaga, Rajmahal, and Dumka.
The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance emerged victorious in all five seats, particularly excelling in Singhbhum, Rajmahal, and Dumka.
Despite the BJP’s campaign focusing on issues of corruption and law enforcement, the JMM effectively mobilized tribal sentiments by highlighting perceived injustices against its leader, Hemant Soren.
In Khunti and Lohardaga, the Congress secured victories, with Union Minister Arjun Munda suffering a significant defeat to Congress’s Kalicharan Munda in Khunti. Similarly, Congress’s Sukhdeo Bhagat triumphed over BJP’s Samir Oraon in Lohardaga.
JMM candidates secured substantial victories in Singhbhum, Rajmahal, and Dumka, further solidifying the alliance’s hold in tribal constituencies.
The closely contested race in Dumka saw JMM’s Nalin Soren narrowly defeating BJP’s Sita Soren, highlighting internal discord within the BJP.
The opposition INDIA bloc, led by prominent leaders including AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, played a significant role in revitalizing support for the JMM.
Elections were held on different dates across the state, with voting taking place in Singhbhum, Khunti, and Lohardaga on May 13, followed by Dumka and Rajmahal on June 1.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren attributed the success of the INDIA bloc to overwhelming public support and resilience against propaganda. He emphasized the significance of public endorsement despite adversities faced during the campaign.
Infighting within the BJP and leveraging of tribal sentiments by the opposition further compounded the BJP’s electoral challenges in the tribal constituencies.
The outcome marks a significant reversal from the NDA’s dominant performance in 2019, underscoring shifting political dynamics in Jharkhand’s tribal regions.
